History of Cielo Vista Mall
Cielo Vista Mall first opened its doors in October 1974. When it first started, it had popular stores like JCPenney and Montgomery Ward. A few years later, a store called Rhodes also opened.
How the Stores Changed Over Time
Over the years, some of the main stores changed names or were replaced.
- The original Montgomery Ward store was later torn down. A new store called Foley's was built in its place in 2002. Foley's then became Macy's in 2006.
- Rhodes became Liberty House in 1974, and then later became Dillard's North in 1998.
- In 1978, a store called Joske's opened. This store later changed to Dillard's West in 1987.
- The mall grew even more in 1982 when Sears opened a new store on the northwest side. Around this time, a new parking area was also added.
Mall Renovations
Cielo Vista Mall has been updated several times. It had big renovations in 1982, 1993, and most recently in 2005. During the 1993 and 2005 updates, many of the large fountains and plants inside the mall were removed. This made more space for small carts and stands, called "kiosks," where different things are sold. Also, the big staircases that wrapped around different areas of the mall were taken out in the 2005 renovation.
Location and Visitors
The mall is about 10 miles (16 km) from downtown El Paso. It's also only about 5 miles (8 km) from the border with Mexico. The mall's owners say that about 10 million people visit Cielo Vista Mall every year!
