Cihuri is a small village in La Rioja, a region in Spain. It is a municipality, which is a type of local government area. The village covers about 30.21 square kilometers. In 2018, around 197 people lived there.

History of Cihuri

Cihuri has a long and interesting history. It dates back to at least the 10th century.

Early Beginnings

In the year 947, a Spanish count named Fernán González gave a monastery to San Millán de la Cogolla. This monastery was dedicated to San Juan Bautista and was located in an area called Zufiuri, which is now Cihuri.

Soon after, the count gave Cihuri the special title of "villa." This meant it had more rights. This caused some disagreements between the people of Cihuri and the friars (monks) at the monastery. Because of this, the village was sometimes called Cihuri de San Millán.

Royal Connections

In the mid-11th century, King Fernando I de Castilla confirmed the gifts that Fernán González had made to the San Millán monastery. The king also added more gifts, like lands, vineyards, orchards, and mills in Cihuri.

Later, in 1075, King Sancho Garcés IV de Navarra and his wife, Mrs. Placencia, also gave land to the San Millán monastery. This included farms near Cihuri.

Disputes and Changes

In 1077, there was a disagreement between the San Millán Monastery and some people from Cihuri. Two brothers, Pelayo Sarracinez and Gonzalo Sarracinez, refused to follow their duties to the monastery.

King Alfonso VI sent an official to help solve the problem. The official ruled in favor of the monastery. However, the Sarracinez brothers were unhappy and left Cihuri.

In 1080, two people named Orbit Aznares and Sancho Ortiz gave their properties near Cihuri to the San Millán monastery.

Modern Times

Cihuri stopped being part of the San Millán Monastery's lands at the end of the 19th century.

For a long time, Cihuri was part of the judicial district of Santo Domingo de la Calzada in the province of Burgos. But when the province of Logroño was created, Cihuri became part of it.

Population of Cihuri

On January 1, 2010, Cihuri had 215 people living there. This included 115 men and 100 women. The population changes over time, but it remains a small community.
