History

When was Cincinnati founded?

Cincinnati was first planned out in 1855. It officially became a town in February 1875. The city was named after Cincinnati, Ohio. An early resident, J.H.B. Armstrong, came from that Ohio city.

Cincinnati's coal mining past

Cincinnati was once a busy place for coal mining. In the late 1800s, many coal mining towns, including Cincinnati, had strong worker groups called unions. These unions worked to improve conditions for miners. Sometimes, there were disagreements and strikes among the workers.

For example, in 1895, soldiers from the Iowa National Guard were called to help keep peace during a miners' strike. By 1912, a local group of the United Mine Workers union in Cincinnati had over 300 members.
