CityPlace at Buckhead facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

CityPlace at Buckhead was a really big building project planned for Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. It was going to be a huge set of buildings where people could live. Imagine a whole new neighborhood!

The plan was to build eight super tall skyscrapers, each about 493 feet (150 meters) high with 42 floors. There would also be another tall building, 27 floors high and about 353 feet (108 meters) tall. This project was going to cover a huge area, about 19.5 acres (which is like 15 football fields!).

What Was Planned for CityPlace?

This massive project was designed to have almost 5 million square feet of space just for homes and apartments. That's a lot of living space! It also planned to include about 95,000 square feet for shops and stores, so people living there could easily get what they needed. In total, there would have been 3,800 different homes or units.

When Was It Approved?

The CityPlace at Buckhead project got its official approval on July 27, 2006. This meant that the city thought it was a good idea and gave permission for it to be built. The famous architecture firm Arquitectonica was in charge of designing all these buildings. They are known for creating amazing and unique structures around the world.

Why Was It Never Built?

Even though CityPlace at Buckhead was approved and had big plans, it never actually got built. In October 2009, something called a "foreclosure" happened. This means that the property went back to the bank that had lent money for the project, which was Wells Fargo Bank.

What Happened Next?

After the foreclosure, the land where CityPlace was supposed to be built was put up for sale again in April 2011. So, the dream of CityPlace at Buckhead, with all its tall skyscrapers and thousands of homes, never came true. It remains an interesting part of Atlanta's history of planned but unbuilt projects.
