Discovering Ciudad Constitución's Past
The area known as Valle de Santo Domingo began to be settled around 1940. A ranch called El Crucero, meaning "The Crossroad," was built at a busy intersection. Because of this, more and more people started to gather there. The population quickly grew.
This spot soon became a center for trade. It was a necessary stop for everyone living in Valle de Santo Domingo. People traveling north or south on the peninsula also had to pass through. The settlement first became known as Villa Constitución. Later, it was renamed Ciudad Constitución. Even today, many local people still call it "El Crucero."
Every year on February 5, the city becomes the state's capital for one day. Since 1996, the Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Ciudad Constitución has offered higher education.
