Vital Rodier was born on May 25, 1839, in Malvieille, France. This village is close to Chambon-sur-Dolore. He later became a missionary brother. He joined the Brothers of the Annunciation. His work took him to Misserghin in Algeria. There, he helped manage an orphanage.

Creating the Clementine

Brother Marie-Clément had a special interest in plants. He worked with the citrus trees at the orphanage. One day, he found an unusual tree. It was growing wild among some thorny bushes. He took a small part of this tree. Then he joined it to another tree. This process is called grafting.

This special graft created a new type of fruit. It was a delicious mandarin orange. People admired its unique qualities. The children at the orphanage named it the "Clementine." They did this to honor Brother Marie-Clément.

What Makes a Clementine Special?

The clementine was different from other oranges. It was redder than a typical mandarin. It had a wonderful taste. Best of all, it had no seeds! This made it very popular. It was a new and exciting fruit.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1903, Brother Marie-Clément joined a new group. It was called the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. He passed away in 1904. His work left a lasting impact.

Years later, in 2010, a building was named after him. Clement Hall is at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This honors his important contribution to the world.
