History of Clam Falls
Before the Clam River had a dam built on it, and before people started logging (cutting down trees for wood), the area around Clam Falls was home to Native Americans. They called this spot "Cobbekonta," which means "Little Falls." The Clam River itself was known as "Kenesca-Seba," or "Clam-Shell River."
Native American Heritage
Today, the St. Croix Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians still live in this area. They continue many traditional activities. These include harvesting wild rice, hunting, fishing, and making maple syrup from trees.
Early Logging and the Dam
The town of Clam Falls is located on the east side of a water area called Clam Flowage. This flowage was created by a dam. The dam was built where McKenzie Creek meets the Clam River.
Logging operations started here in the late 1840s. The dam was built in 1859 by a man named Daniel F. Smith. Smith also improved an old road. This road became known as the Clam Falls Road. It was a very busy road that connected Clam Falls to Butternut Lake. You can still see parts of this old road today. Signs even mark its path, which crosses the modern County Road I.
