History of Lewis
How Lewis Got Its Name
The community of Lewis is named after its founder, Charles E. Lewis. He was a businessman from Minnesota who bought a lot of land in the Clam Falls area around the early 1900s.
Seven Pines Lodge and Famous Visitors
Charles E. Lewis built a large home called "Seven Pines Lodge." This lodge became quite famous in the 1920s. Important guests, including President Calvin Coolidge, visited it. Today, "Seven Pines Lodge" is still a private resort.
Knapp Creek: A Special Stream
Near Lewis, there's a stream called Knapp Creek. It was once known as an amazing place for trout fishing. Even today, it's considered a Class I trout stream. This means it's a very healthy stream for trout. However, much of the stream flows through private land, so it's not open for public fishing.
Changes Over Time
Like many communities in this area, Lewis has seen its population and businesses shrink over the years. This happened after the logging and railroad industries, which were very important to the area, declined.
