Clanculus plebejus, also known as the plebeian clanculus, is a type of small sea snail. It's a mollusk that lives in the ocean. This snail belongs to the family Trochidae, which are often called top snails because of their shell shape.

About the Plebeian Clanculus

The shell of the plebeian clanculus is quite small. It usually measures between 6 mm and 11 mm. That's about the size of a small pea or a little bigger.

Shell Colors and Patterns

The shell can be many colors. You might see it in pinkish-brown, gray, or yellow. It often has cool patterns too. These patterns include dots of black and white on its ribs. These dots can form lines that spread out like rays on the top. On the bottom, they might look like zigzag lines.

Shell Shape and Features

The shell has a low, cone-like shape at the top, which is called the spire. The very tip, or apex, is sharp. The shell has about five whorls, which are the turns of the shell. These whorls have rough ridges on them.

The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is rounded. The edges of this opening are a bit thick and have tiny bumps. Inside the shell, there's a central column called the columella. The shell also has a wide belly button-like opening called the umbilicus.

Where it Lives

This sea snail is special because it is endemic to Australia. This means it is only found there! You can find Clanculus plebejus off the coasts of several Australian states. These include New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia.
