The Story Behind Clappana's Name
Clappana has a rich history, and its name comes from several interesting old stories. Many of these tales are connected to the village's farming past.
Cattle and Palm Trees
One popular legend says that long ago, farmers brought their bulls to the famous Ochira temple. They would tie these bulls to the many palm trees in this area. Because of this, the place became known as Kalapana, which means "bulls and palm trees." Over time, this name slowly changed into Clappana.
A Land of Farms
Clappana was once known as the "paddy field of Onnatukara." This means it had huge farming lands and many hardworking people. During harvest season, groups of cattle were brought from southern regions to help with plowing. These cattle and their traders would camp in the southern part of Clappana, where lots of palm trees grew.
There was even a special place for them to relax and a "water pantal" (a place to get water) to quench their thirst. A family called Thanneerkarasseri was in charge of providing this water. Their family name still reminds people of this tradition today.
The Magical Palm Tree
Another story tells of a very large palm tree near the Chirakadav temple in southern Clappana. People believed this tree was special. No matter how many oil lamps were lit under it, the lamps would catch fire very quickly. Because of this, it was called Klavupana, meaning "the palm with special powers." As generations passed, Klavupana eventually became Clappana.
