Clara Cordelia Moses Cannon (born April 21, 1839 – died August 21, 1926) was an important pioneer in the early days of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was also a leader in the Primary organization. This group helps teach children about their faith. Clara served as a counselor in the first-ever general presidency of the Primary. She worked alongside the general president, Louie B. Felt, from 1880 to 1895.

Early Life and Journey

Clara Moses was born in Westfield, Massachusetts, in 1839. When she was seven years old, her family began a long journey. In 1846, they traveled for six months on a ship called the Brooklyn. The ship sailed from New York City all the way to San Francisco. They went around Cape Horn, which is at the very tip of South America. They also passed by the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii).

Settling in California

Instead of continuing to Utah Territory, Clara and her family settled in San Francisco. This is where she grew up. In 1859, Clara married William H. Mason. They had two children together. Sadly, William Mason passed away in 1868.

Life in Utah

After her husband's death, Clara moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1875, she married Angus M. Cannon. Together, Clara and Angus had three children.

Church Service

Before she joined the general Primary presidency, Clara Cannon was already a leader in her local church community. She served as a counselor in the Primary and Relief Society organizations in the Salt Lake Stake. These roles helped her prepare for bigger responsibilities.

When Louie B. Felt became the first general president of the Primary, she chose Clara Cannon and Matilda M. Barratt to be her counselors. Clara served in this important role until 1895. The next year, Josephine R. West took her place.

Later Years and Passing

Clara Moses Cannon lived a long life. She passed away from cancer in Centerville, Utah, when she was 87 years old. She was buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
