He was the Chairman of the Tachi Yokuts people who live on the Santa Rosa Rancheria. He served in this role for a very long time, from 1967 until 2009. Many people believe that Atwell greatly improved the lives of the people on the Santa Rosa Rancheria during his 42 years as Chairman.

Early Life and Traditions

Clarence Atwell Jr. was born on Tachi Yokuts land on November 30, 1945. He was born outdoors, under a tree. His father was a medicine man, a person who uses traditional knowledge to help people.

Clarence was raised by his grandmother. She spoke only the Tachi language, which is the traditional language of the Tachi Yokuts people. She taught him many important Tachi Yokuts traditions. She also taught him how to hunt.

Later in his life, Clarence Atwell Jr. also became a medicine man, just like his father. As an adult, he led traditional events like bear dances and sweat lodge ceremonies. These events took place in different parts of California.

A Leader for His People

Clarence Atwell Jr. became the Chairman of the Tachi Yokuts of Santa Rosa Rancheria in 1967. This meant he was the main leader for his tribe. He worked hard to make life better for his community.
