Clarence Skelton Wimble (born April 22, 1861 – died January 28, 1930) was a South African cricketer. He played only one special international match, called a Test match, in 1892. He was known as a good right-handed batsman and an excellent fielder.

Who Was Clarence Wimble?

Clarence Wimble was a talented sportsman from South Africa. He was born in Graaff-Reinet, a town in the Cape Colony, in 1861. He grew up to become a cricketer, which is a sport similar to baseball but played with different rules.

His Cricket Journey

Clarence Wimble's cricket career was quite short. He played only two important matches, known as first-class games. These matches happened over about eleven months. He was a right-handed batsman, meaning he held the bat with his right hand forward. He was also a very good fielder, catching balls and stopping runs.

His First Big Match

His first big game was in April 1891. It was a Currie Cup match. His team, Transvaal, played against Kimberley. The game was played at the Old Wanderers ground in Johannesburg. Kimberley won this match.

Even though his team lost, Clarence played very well. He scored the most runs for Transvaal in their first turn at batting, getting 62 runs. Then, in their second turn, he scored 46 runs. This was a great start to his career!

Playing for South Africa

Because he played so well, Clarence was chosen to play for South Africa. This was a huge honour! He played in South Africa's only Test match against the England team in 1892.

The Test Match Experience

The Test match was played in March 1892 at Newlands in Cape Town. A Test match is the highest level of international cricket. It was a three-day game. Unfortunately, the England team was very strong and won the match easily.

In this match, Clarence Wimble had a tough time. He scored zero runs in both turns at batting. This is called a "pair" in cricket. He was caught out in the first turn and stumped out in the second. Even though it wasn't his best game, playing in a Test match is a big achievement for any cricketer.

Life After Cricket

After his short cricket career, Clarence Wimble lived in Parktown West in Johannesburg. He worked as an accountant, which means he managed money records for people or businesses. He passed away in January 1930 at the age of 67. He died from a heart illness.
