Melrose Township is a small community located in Charlevoix County, in the state of Michigan, USA. It's a type of local government area called a civil township. In 2020, about 1,405 people lived here.

The township was officially created in 1877. It was separated from another area called Evangeline Township by the County Board of Supervisors.

Communities in Melrose Township

Melrose Township is home to several interesting communities, some of which have a long history.

Clarion: A Historic Spot

  • Clarion is a small, unincorporated community within the township. It started around 1874 when John Darrah and his family settled there.
  • Clarion got its first post office in 1879, and John Darrah was the first postmaster.
  • The community was named after Clarion, Pennsylvania.
  • It also had a train station on the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, which helped people travel and transport goods. The post office closed in 1945.

Lake Junction: A Railway Hub

  • Lake Junction was a historic settlement important for trains. It was where two railway lines met.
  • These lines connected the Clarion and Walloon Lake train stations.

Troutdale: A Lakeside Community

A big part of the township's eastern side borders Walloon Lake, a well-known lake in the area.

Main Roads in the Township

  • US 131 is a major highway that runs straight through the middle of the township, going from south to north.
  • M-75 (also called South Shore Drive) goes through the western part of the township and ends when it meets US 131. After crossing US 131, this road continues and is known as C-81.
  • C-81 (also called River Road) is a county-designated highway. It starts east of M-75 at US 131 and goes through the northern part of the township.
