Clarisse Leite Dias Baptista (born January 11, 1917 – died May 11, 2003) was an important Brazilian composer, pianist, and music teacher. She was born in São Paulo, Brazil. Clarisse studied music there and also in France. After her studies, she became a music professor. She taught at the Academia Internacional in Rio de Janeiro.

Clarisse Leite Dias Baptista had three sons. They all became famous rock musicians! Her sons were Cláudio César Dias Baptista, Arnaldo Dias Baptista, and Sérgio Dias Baptista.

Her Music

Clarisse Leite wrote many different kinds of music. She composed pieces for orchestras, for small groups of instruments (called chamber music), for piano, and for singers. She was especially known for her music that used ideas from Brazilian folklore. Folklore means the traditional stories, customs, and beliefs of a country.

Here are some of her well-known works:

  • Suite Nordestina (1971): This suite has three parts.
    • "Baticum"
    • "Prece por Maria Bonita" (A Prayer to Maria Bonita)
    • "Jacunços" (Gunmen)
  • Duo concertante no. 1 for two pianos
  • Feche os olhinhos que o soninho vem (Close your eyes and sleep will come): This was a lullaby for solo piano.
  • Dança dos esquilos (Dance of the Squirrels): A fun piece for solo piano.
  • Vendaval (Gale): A fantasy piece for solo piano.
  • Yoga - (Espumas flutuantes) (Yoga - Floating Foams): Another piece for solo piano.

Her music has been recorded and released on CDs. One example is the album Brasileira: Piano Music by Brazilian Women, which came out in 2004.
