Clarksville is a small place in Hamilton County, Indiana. It is an "unincorporated community." This means it does not have its own separate town government. Instead, it is part of Wayne Township. Clarksville was probably named after George Rogers Clark. He was an important officer during the American Revolutionary War.

Early Days as Nicholsonville
Clarksville was originally called Nicholsonville. This name was given to it in 1849. A person named Abraham Nicholson helped to plan and set up the community.
Becoming and Un-becoming a Town
In 1867, Clarksville officially became an "incorporated town." This meant it had its own local government. However, this official town status did not last forever. Later, its incorporation was ended, and it went back to being an unincorporated community.
Mail Service History
A post office was first opened in Nicholsonville in 1850. In the same year, its name changed to Clarksville. The post office served the community for many years. It finally closed down in 1902.
