Claude Berri (born July 1, 1934 – died January 12, 2009) was a famous French filmmaker. He was a director, writer, producer, and actor. He helped create many well-known movies in France and around the world.

Early Life
Claude Berri was born in Paris, France. His full name was Claude Beri Langmann. His parents were immigrants from Romania and Poland. His father worked with furs. Claude also had a sister named Arlette Langmann, who became a screenwriter and editor.
A Career in Film
Claude Berri had a very successful career in movies. He won an important award called the "Best Film" BAFTA for his movie Jean de Florette. He was also nominated for many César Awards, which are like the French Oscars.
One of his biggest achievements was winning an Oscar for Best Short Film. This was for his movie Le Poulet (which means "The Chicken") in 1966. He also produced Tess, a film directed by Roman Polanski, which was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars in 1981.
His most famous films internationally were Jean de Florette and its sequel Manon des Sources, both released in 1986. These movies were huge hits and made him very well-known.
Later, in 2003, Claude Berri became the President of the Cinémathèque Française. This is a famous French film archive and museum. He helped get money to improve its new location.
Personal Life
Claude Berri was married to Anne-Marie Rassam. They had two sons together: Julien Rassam and Thomas Langmann. Both of his sons also became involved in the film industry as actors and producers.
Death
Claude Berri passed away in Paris at the age of 74. He died from a stroke.
