Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (French: Astérix et Obélix : Mission Cléopâtre) is a funny fantasy film from 2002. It was made in France and Italy. The movie is based on the famous Asterix comic book series by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo.
This film is a sequel to the 1999 movie Asterix & Obelix Take On Caesar. It also uses the story from the Asterix and Cleopatra comic book, which was made into an animated movie in 1968.
Christian Clavier plays Asterix and Gérard Depardieu plays Obelix again. New actors like Jamel Debbouze and Monica Bellucci also joined the cast.
At the time, this movie was the most expensive French film ever made. It was very popular and earned a lot of money in France. It became one of the most successful French films of all time!

Different Movie Versions
Miramax Films changed the movie for audiences in North America. They cut about 21 minutes from the film. They also dubbed the movie into English, using American actors for the voices.
English Dubbing Changes
The English script added many new jokes. These jokes often referred to modern pop culture. For example, the character Edifis sometimes called Getafix a "droid". This was a play on words with "druid".
Some characters also acted a bit differently. Obelix, for instance, seemed much smarter in the English version. The names of some characters were changed to match other English Asterix translations. Minor characters, like the pirate crew, were even named after famous rock and roll musicians!
Other Translations
For other countries, the English subtitles were a direct translation of the French dialogue. Only the character names were changed to match the original English comic books. In Australia, the DVD had two discs. One had the original French movie, and the other had the Miramax English version.
What the Movie Is About
The story begins with Queen Cleopatra of Egypt. She is angry because Julius Caesar keeps making fun of Egypt. Cleopatra makes a deal with Caesar: if the Egyptians can build a huge palace in Alexandria in just three months, Caesar must admit that Egypt is the greatest nation.
Building the Palace
Cleopatra hires an architect named Numerobis for this big job. If he fails, he will be punished! Pyradonis, Cleopatra's usual architect, is not happy about this. Numerobis hears about the druid Getafix (Panoramix in French). Getafix has a special potion that gives people super strength.
Numerobis travels to Gaul and convinces Getafix to come to Alexandria with him. Once they arrive, Getafix uses his magic potion to help the workers build the palace super fast. Cleopatra gives them permission to use the potion.
Problems and Sabotage
Pyradonis realizes he must stop Numerobis. He tries to sabotage the project. He even tries to get Asterix, Obelix, and Getafix lost in a pyramid! He also tries to make it look like they tried to hurt Cleopatra.
When his plans fail, Pyradonis tells Caesar about the magic potion. Caesar knows the Gauls are strong (he has tried to capture their village many times). He decides to surround the construction site. He wants Asterix, Obelix, and Getafix to give up.
The Final Battle
Numerobis, his secretary Papyris, and the three Gauls defend the site. They send a message to Cleopatra about Caesar's actions. Meanwhile, Pyradonis and Numerobis both drink the potion and fight! Numerobis wins the duel.
Cleopatra arrives and tells Caesar that his actions are unfair. The Romans are forced to stop their attack. They even have to help finish the palace! The palace is completed on time.
The Happy Ending
The new palace is officially opened. Caesar, even though he doesn't want to, declares Egypt the greatest empire. Numerobis gets a lot of gold. Getafix receives valuable scrolls from the Library of Alexandria. Everyone, even some of the Roman bad guys, celebrates with a big banquet (a feast).
