Claude Brasseur was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. His birth name was Claude Pierre Espinasse. He came from a family of actors. His father, Pierre Brasseur, and his mother, Odette Joyeux, were also well-known actors. A fun fact is that the famous writer Ernest Hemingway was his godfather!
More Than Just Acting
Claude Brasseur was a talented person with many interests. In the 1960s, he was part of the French national bobsleigh team. He also loved car racing. He even won the tough Paris-Dakar rally as a co-pilot with Jacky Ickx. This shows he was an adventurer both on and off screen!
His Acting Career
Claude Brasseur acted in over 150 films and television shows. His career started in the late 1950s and continued almost until his death. He was known as a great "character actor" in France. This means he was very good at playing many different kinds of roles.
One of his early famous movie roles was as Arthur in Jean-Luc Godard's film Bande à part. In the early 1970s, he played the main character in the TV series The New Adventures of Vidocq, which was about a historical crime solver.
He became very popular with younger audiences for his roles in the comedy movies La Boum (1980) and La Boum 2 (1982). In these films, he played the father of the teenage character played by Sophie Marceau. These movies were a huge success!
Claude Brasseur passed away on December 22, 2020, when he was 84 years old.
