Sophie Marceau (born Sophie Danièle Sylvie Maupu on November 17, 1966) is a famous French actress. She became a star as a teenager in her first movies, La Boum (1980) and La Boum 2 (1982). For her role in the sequel, she won a César Award for Most Promising Actress, a major award in France.
Sophie became a big star in Europe, appearing in popular movies like L'Étudiante (1988) and Revenge of the Musketeers (1994). She gained worldwide fame with her roles in the historical movie Braveheart (1995) and as the character Elektra King in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999).
Throughout her career, Sophie has appeared on over 300 magazine covers and has been a model for many well-known brands. In 2003, she was given the title of Officer (Officier) in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, an honor from the French government for her work in the arts.

Sophie Marceau was born in Paris, France. Her mother, Simone, was a shop assistant, and her father, Benoît Maupu, was a truck driver. Her parents divorced when she was nine years old.
Film Career
Becoming a Teen Star
In 1980, when Sophie was a teenager, she and her mother visited a modeling agency. The agency was looking for new faces for a movie called La Boum. The film's director, Claude Pinoteau, chose Sophie for the main role.
La Boum was a huge success in France, selling over 4 million tickets. The movie made Sophie an instant star. In 1982, she starred in the sequel, La Boum 2, which earned her a César Award. After this, she wanted to try more serious and dramatic roles.
Taking on New Roles
Throughout the 1980s, Sophie acted in many different kinds of films. She appeared in the historical movie Fort Saganne (1984) with famous French actors Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve. She also starred in dramas like Police (1985) and Descente aux enfers (1986).
In 1988, she starred in the popular romance L'Étudiante (The Student). In 1991, she began acting on stage in a play called Eurydice. Her performance was so good that she won a Moliere Award, which is like a Tony Award for French theater.
International Fame
Sophie became a global star in 1995 when she played Princess Isabelle in the movie Braveheart, alongside Mel Gibson. This role introduced her to audiences all over the world.
She continued to star in international films. In 1997, she played the lead role in Anna Karenina, which was filmed in Russia. In 1999, she became famous as the villain Elektra King in the James Bond movie The World Is Not Enough.
Recent Work
Since the 2000s, Sophie has continued to act, mostly in French films. She played a member of the French Resistance during World War II in Female Agents (2008) and a single mother in LOL (Laughing Out Loud) (2008).
In 2013, she starred in Arrêtez-moi (Arrest Me), playing a woman who confesses to a crime she committed years ago. In 2015, she was chosen to be a jury member at the famous 2015 Cannes Film Festival, helping to pick the best films.
Author and Director
Besides acting, Sophie is also a writer and director. In 1996, she wrote a book called Menteuse (which means "Liar" in French). The English version, Telling Lies, was released in 2001.
In 2002, she directed her first movie, Speak to Me of Love. For this film, she won the Best Director award at the Montreal World Film Festival. She has since directed other films, including Trivial (2007) and Mrs. Mills (2018).
Personal Life
From 1985 to 2001, Sophie was in a relationship with Polish director Andrzej Żuławski. They have a son named Vincent. Later, she was in a relationship with producer Jim Lemley, and they have a daughter named Juliette.
Sophie is a talented musician and can play the cello, which she showed in the 1999 movie Lost & Found. She speaks both French and English fluently.

Decorations
In 2003, the French government honored Sophie by making her an Officer in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. This award is given to people who have made great contributions to the arts. The Minister of Culture said she was a role model who represented "the image of the perfect French woman."
In 2016, Sophie revealed that she had refused the Legion of Honour, France's highest award. She explained that she did not want to accept the honor because the French president had recently given the same award to the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. She pointed to news reports about human rights problems in that country, especially regarding women's rights. By refusing the award, she took a stand for her beliefs.
