Andrzej Żuławski (born 22 November 1940 – died 17 February 2016) was a famous Polish film director and writer. He was known for making unique and artistic films that were often different from typical movies. His films were especially popular with people who enjoyed thought-provoking cinema in Europe.

In the late 1950s, he studied filmmaking in France. His second movie, The Devil (1972), was not allowed to be shown in Poland at the time. Because of this, Żuławski moved to France. After his film That Most Important Thing: Love became successful in 1975, he went back to Poland. There, he spent two years working on On the Silver Globe. However, the government stopped this film from being finished and released it much later in 1988.

After this, Żuławski moved back to France. He became known for powerful and sometimes intense artistic films, like Possession (1981). Żuławski also worked with many famous actresses, including Romy Schneider, Isabelle Adjani, and Sophie Marceau.

His films won awards at many international film festivals around the world. Besides directing, Żuławski also wrote several novels. Some of his books include Il était Un Verger, Lity Bór, W Oczach Tygrysa, and Ogród Miłości.

Andrzej Żuławski's Life Story

Żuławski was born in Lviv, which was then part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. When he was younger, he worked as an assistant to another well-known filmmaker, Andrzej Wajda.

Early Career and Moving to France

When his second film, The Devil, was banned in Poland, Żuławski decided to move to France. There, he directed That Most Important Thing: Love (1975), starring the famous actress Romy Schneider.

After this success, he returned to Poland. He spent two years making a film called On the Silver Globe. This movie was based on a book written by his great-uncle, Jerzy Żuławski. However, the authorities did not allow him to finish or release the film at that time.

Later Work and Artistic Style

After the issues with On the Silver Globe, Żuławski mostly lived and worked in France. He continued to make artistic films that were often unique and didn't follow popular trends. He was a director who liked to do things his own way.

His creative, imaginative, and sometimes surprising films won awards at many international film festivals. He also wrote novels like Il était Un Verger and La Forêt Forteresse.

In 2006, he was chosen to be the head of the judges at the 28th Moscow International Film Festival.

Żuławski often worked with the composer Andrzej Korzyński. Their first film together was The Third Part of the Night in 1971. Their last movie collaboration was Cosmos (2015), which was also Żuławski's final film.

Andrzej Żuławski passed away on 17 February 2016, in a hospital in Warsaw, due to cancer.
