Claude Lamoral de Ligne (1618-1679)
Claude Lamoral, Third Prince de Ligne, a Belgian diplomat who worked for the Spanish kings Philip IV and Charles II.

Claude Lamoral, 3rd Prince of Ligne (born October 8, 1618 – died December 21, 1679), was an important nobleman from what is now Belgium. He was a soldier and a diplomat who served the kings of Spain, Philip IV of Spain and Charles II of Spain.

Life of Claude Lamoral

Claude Lamoral was born in Belœil. He became the third Prince of Ligne after his brother, Albert Henry, passed away in 1641. In 1642, Claude Lamoral married Claire Marie of Nassau-Siegen, who was his brother's widow.

He held many important titles, including Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and Grandee of Spain. He also became a Knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1646. This was a very special award given to important people in Europe.

Military and Diplomatic Roles

From 1649 to 1669, Claude Lamoral was the Captain General of the Spanish Cavalry in the Spanish Netherlands. This was a very high military position, showing his skill as a leader.

In 1660, he was sent to England as a representative of the Spanish King. He met with Charles II of England, whose family had just been restored to the throne. This visit was important because it was the first time a foreign country officially recognized the new English monarchy.

Viceroy and Governor

Later, Claude Lamoral was appointed Viceroy of Sicily from 1670 to 1674. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a country or province as the king's representative. While in Sicily, he worked to make the coast safer. He built up defenses to protect the people from pirates who would attack and capture them.

After his time in Sicily, he became the Governor of the Duchy of Milan from 1674 to 1678.

Claude Lamoral and his wife, Claire Marie, also worked on improving their family home, the Chateau of Belœil. They made the castle and its beautiful French-style gardens much larger. Today, parts of these gardens are open for people to visit.

Family

Claude Lamoral and Claire Marie had several children. Their son, Henri, later became the 4th Prince of Ligne.
