José Claudio Aranzadi Martínez, born on October 9, 1946, is a Spanish engineer, businessman, and politician. He was a government minister, serving as the Minister of Industry from 1988 to 1993.

Early Life and Education

José Claudio Aranzadi Martínez was born in Bilbao, Spain, on October 9, 1946. He studied industrial engineering at the Bilbao Industrial Engineering School. Later, he earned a degree in economics from the University of Paris I in France.

Career Highlights

Aranzadi started his career working for the Spanish Ministry of Industry. After that, he joined Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, a large bank, where he worked as a researcher. He then became a deputy economic advisor for the Bancaya Group.

Leading a Big Company

In 1984, Aranzadi was made the deputy chairman of Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI). INI was a huge company owned by the Spanish government. It controlled many different businesses.

On August 1, 1986, he became the chairman of INI. He believed that selling parts of the company to private owners, known as privatization, was a good way to manage its assets. He stayed at INI until July 12, 1988.

Serving as a Minister

From 1988 to 1991, Aranzadi served as the Minister of Industry and Energy. He was part of the government led by Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez. Aranzadi was a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.

In 1991, he was appointed Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism. He held this position until 1993. After leaving his role as minister, Aranzadi became Spain's permanent representative to the OECD in 1993. The OECD is an international group that works to improve economic progress and world trade.

Later Roles

After his time in government, Aranzadi continued to work in business. He has been the chairman of BravoSolution España. He also served as an advisor for Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria. He is a partner at Enerma Consultores. He also advises other companies and organizations.

Family Life

José Claudio Aranzadi Martínez is related to Rafael Moreno Aranzadi. Rafael Moreno Aranzadi was a famous football player known as Pichichi. José Claudio Aranzadi is married and has one daughter.
