Early Life and Education
Juan Manuel Eguiagaray was born in Bilbao, Spain, on December 25, 1945. His family was from the Basque region. He studied at the University of Deusto in Bilbao. There, he earned degrees in both economics and law. He also received a PhD in economics.
Political Career and Public Service
From 1970 to 1982, Eguiagaray taught economics at the University of Deusto. In the 1970s, he became involved in politics. He joined the PSOE, which is a major political party in Spain. He also became a member of the PSOE's main leadership group.
Eguiagaray was elected to the Spanish Parliament. He represented the Murcia province. In 1989, he was part of the Spanish government's team. They held talks with a group called ETA in Algiers. He was a close helper to the Minister of the Interior at that time.
In 1991, he became the Minister for Public Administration. He took over this role from Joaquín Almunia in the government led by Prime Minister Felipe González Márquez. He held this position until 1993.
Later in 1993, he was appointed Minister for Industry and Energy. This happened during a change in the government's leadership. He replaced Claudio Aranzadi in this role. Eguiagaray served as Minister of Industry and Energy until 1996. He then retired from politics in 2001.
Life After Politics
After leaving politics, Eguiagaray went back to teaching. He taught subjects like macroeconomics and applied economics. He was a professor at Carlos III University in Madrid until 2006.
He also worked as a director for the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (now part of Airbus). He held this position until February 2013. Additionally, he was the director of studies at Fundación Alternativas. This is a research group based in Madrid.
Death
Juan Manuel Eguiagaray passed away on May 29, 2025. He was 79 years old.
