Claudio Roditi (born May 28, 1946 – died January 17, 2020) was a talented jazz trumpet player from Brazil. He was known for his amazing music and for playing a special type of trumpet called a rotary trumpet. Claudio became famous for his unique style, mixing Brazilian music with jazz.

In 1966, when he was still quite young, Claudio was chosen as one of the best trumpet players at an important jazz competition in Vienna, Austria. While he was there, he met Art Farmer, who was one of his favorite musicians. This meeting inspired Claudio to follow his dream of becoming a jazz musician.

Early Life and Career

Claudio Roditi was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He loved music from a young age. After his inspiring meeting with Art Farmer, he decided to move to the United States.

In 1970, he came to America to study music. He attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston. This school is famous for teaching jazz and other modern music styles.

After finishing his studies, Claudio moved to New York City in 1976. New York is a big city for jazz music. There, he got to play with many famous musicians. He performed with Herbie Mann and Charlie Rouse.

Working with Jazz Legends

In the 1980s, Claudio Roditi worked with Paquito D'Rivera, a well-known Cuban jazz musician. They played many concerts together. Claudio also became a member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra. Dizzy Gillespie was a legendary jazz trumpet player. Being part of his orchestra was a big honor for Claudio.

Claudio released his first album as a band leader in 1984. It was called Red On Red. He continued to release many albums throughout his career.

Awards and Recognition

Claudio Roditi's music was recognized with important awards. In 2009, he was nominated for a Grammy Award. This was for his album Brazillance X 4, in the category of Best Latin Jazz Album. The Grammy Awards are one of the biggest honors in the music world.

He was also a featured soloist on a song called Atras Da Porta. This song was part of the album Symphonic Bossa Nova. The person who arranged the music for this song, Jorge Calandrelli, also received a Grammy nomination for it in 1995. This showed how much Claudio's playing added to the music.

Later Life

Claudio Roditi continued to play and record music for many years. He was known for his smooth and soulful trumpet playing. He often used a special type of trumpet called a rotary trumpet. This instrument has a different sound compared to a regular piston trumpet.

Claudio Roditi passed away on January 17, 2020, at the age of 73. He died from cancer. His music continues to inspire many jazz fans and young musicians around the world.
