Claudio Scimone (born December 23, 1934 – died September 6, 2018) was a famous Italian conductor. He was known for bringing many old musical works back to life. He also founded a well-known music group called I Solisti Veneti.

Early Life and Training

Claudio Scimone was born in Padua, a city in Italy. He loved music from a young age. He decided to study how to lead an orchestra, which is called conducting. His teachers included famous conductors like Dmitri Mitropoulos and Franco Ferrara. These studies helped him become a skilled musician.

A Career in Music

Scimone became very well-known around the world. He was not only a conductor but also a composer, meaning he wrote music. He had a special talent for finding and performing old music. He helped people rediscover many beautiful pieces from the Baroque and Renaissance periods. These are periods in history when music had a very distinct style.

He made more than 150 recordings of music. These recordings helped share his work with many people. He also won many awards for his musical achievements. One important award was the Grand Prix du Disque.

Leading Orchestras

Claudio Scimone created his own music group called I Solisti Veneti. This group became very famous. Most of his recordings were made with this ensemble. He also worked with other major orchestras. For example, he conducted the Philharmonia of London. With them, he made the first recording of symphonies by Muzio Clementi.

Later in his life, he became the honorary conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra. This orchestra is located in Lisbon, Portugal.

Bringing Old Operas to Life

Scimone played a big part in showing the world how important Vivaldi's operas were. Operas are plays where the story is told through music and singing. He led the first modern performance of Vivaldi's Orlando furioso. Famous singers like Marilyn Horne and Victoria de los Ángeles performed in this show.

He also helped bring other old operas back to the stage. At the rebuilt Teatro La Fenice opera house in Venice, he directed the first modern show of Rossini's Maometto secondo. He also led the first modern performances of Rossini's Moses in Egypt and Oedipus at Colonus. Another important work he revived was The Last Judgement by Antonio Salieri.

Awards and Honors

Claudio Scimone received many important honors for his work. He was given the title of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. This is one of the highest honors in Italy. He also received an honorary law degree from the University of Padua. This showed how much his home city respected his achievements.
