The Story of Clay Center
Clay Center got its name because it was once the middle of a much larger area called Clay Township. When Ottawa County was created in 1840, this big township included what is now Allen Township.
The village was started by a man named William Clark. He thought that a town in the center of the large township would grow more than other places. In 1888, the original Clay Township split into two parts. This made Clay Center a part of the new Allen Township.
