Clear Channel Broadcasting Tower Redfield facts for kids
The Clear Channel Broadcasting Tower Redfield is a very tall tower located in Grant County, near the town of Redfield, in Arkansas. It's a type of tower called a "guyed mast," which means it's held up by strong cables anchored to the ground. This tower was finished in 1985 and stands incredibly tall at 1,898.9 feet (about 578.8 meters). That's taller than many skyscrapers!
History of the Tower
The tower was built for a TV station named KASN, which started broadcasting in 1986. Even though some official records from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) might say it was built in 2001, that's a mistake. The tower has been standing since the mid-1980s.
Over the years, the tower has changed owners. Originally, a company called Clear Channel Communications owned it when they also owned KASN. Later, KASN and other TV stations were sold to different companies, and now KASN is owned by Mission Broadcasting.
What the Tower Does
This giant tower is super important because it helps broadcast TV and radio signals to many homes. It sends out signals for several stations:
- KASN: This TV station uses the tower for both its older "analog" and newer "digital" broadcasts.
- KHKN: This is an FM radio station that also uses the tower.
- KETS: This is the main station for the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN). It uses the tower for its digital TV signals.
Helping Other Stations
There was another big TV tower nearby, called the KATV Tower, but it sadly collapsed. Before it fell, KETS used that tower for its analog TV signal. After the KATV Tower collapsed, the Clear Channel Broadcasting Tower Redfield became even more important.
In 2008, the TV station KATV considered using space on this tower to get back on the air while they worked on rebuilding their own tower. Also, AETN announced in March 2008 that KETS's analog signal would be restored from this tower. This shows how crucial the Clear Channel Broadcasting Tower Redfield is for broadcasting in the area.
