Clemens Baeumker (born September 16, 1853 – died October 7, 1924) was an important German historian of philosophy. He was especially known for his deep studies into the history of thinking during the Middle Ages.
Clemens Baeumker was born in Paderborn, Germany. His father was a teacher at a high school. Clemens first studied philosophy, theology (the study of religion), and philology (the study of language and literature) in Paderborn. Later, he continued his studies at the University of Münster. He earned his doctorate degree from the University of Münster in 1877. After finishing his studies, he worked as a lecturer at a high school in Münster starting in 1879.
In 1883, a person named Georg von Hertling helped Baeumker become a professor of philosophy at the University of Breslau. He taught there for many years, until 1900. After that, he moved to the University of Bonn in 1900. Then, in 1903, he moved again to the University of Strasbourg. At Strasbourg, he took over the teaching position that had been left open by another famous philosopher, Wilhelm Windelband. Finally, in 1912, he moved to the University of Munich. There, he took over the position that his friend, Georg von Hertling, had left. Clemens Baeumker passed away in Munich in 1924.
Baeumker was most famous for his work on medieval philosophy. This is the study of ideas and thinkers from the Middle Ages, a period of history from about the 5th to the 15th century. He helped people understand the deep thoughts and ideas from that time.
