Paderborn is a city in the middle west of Germany. It is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city's name comes from the river Pader and "born". "Born" is an old German word for the source of a river. The Pader River starts from over 200 springs near the Paderborn Cathedral.
About 150,338 people live in Paderborn. It is also home to a university.

Sports in Paderborn
Paderborn has exciting sports teams. The city has a football club called SC Paderborn 07. This team plays in Germany's top men's league. There is also a basketball team, the Paderborn Baskets. They play in the second German league.
History and Famous Visitors
Paderborn has a rich history. Two important popes have visited the city. Pope Leo III came to Paderborn in 799. Later, Pope John Paul II visited in 1996.
Paderborn Cathedral
Paderborn is known for its very large cathedral. This impressive building was constructed by Charlemagne. He was a famous emperor known as "Karl der Große" in German.
