A Look Back in Time
Clementsville got its name from an early settler named Philip Clements. The community grew around one of the oldest Roman Catholic settlements in the Archdiocese of Louisville. In 1802, seven Catholic families moved here from Washington County, Kentucky. They settled near Casey Creek, which is close to Clementsville.
These families started what became Saint Bernard Catholic Church. It was named after St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Many people living in Clementsville today are direct descendants of these original families. St. Bernard Church is still the main gathering place and "heartbeat" of Clementsville.
Fun Events and Places
St. Bernard Church hosts two big annual events. The first is the St. Bernard Picnic and Homecoming. It started in 1881 and happens every year on the first Saturday of July. It's a fun day for everyone!
The church also hosts the Clementsville Variety Show. This show is known as "the longest-running entertainment show in the area." It takes place every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
A Kentucky historian named John A. Lyons wrote a book about the church and Clementsville. It's called "Historical Sketches of the Parish of St. Bernard of Clairvaux on Casey Creek, Clementsville, Kentucky." He wrote that it's a story of brave pioneers and their families. It also tells about missionaries who helped build the Catholic community in Kentucky.
Local Spots and Features
Besides St. Bernard Church, Clementsville has J & B Grocery. This store used to be called Frank's Grocery. It's a very old and important place where many local people shop and eat daily.
Clementsville is also special because it has the only airplane landing strip in all of Casey County. This landing strip is right across from a pumping station. This station is part of a natural gas pipeline. The pipeline gathers gas from the Gulf of Mexico and sends it all the way to New York.
