About Cleopatra Tucker
Cleopatra Tucker was born and grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. She went to Tennessee State University and studied sociology, which is the study of how people live together in groups.
In 1966, she moved to Newark, New Jersey. She worked for the Newark Housing Authority starting in 1976 and retired in 2002. Today, she is the leader of a non-profit group called The Centre, Inc. Non-profit groups work to help the community without making money for owners. The Centre's main office is named after her late husband, Donald Kofi Tucker.
Family Life
Cleopatra Tucker lives in the Weequahic neighborhood of Newark. She has two adult children with her late husband.
Her Political Journey
Cleopatra Tucker became involved in politics after her husband, Donald Tucker, who was also a politician, passed away. She later ran for a seat in the New Jersey General Assembly. In 2007, she and Ralph R. Caputo won the Democratic primary election. They had the support of Newark Mayor Cory Booker.
Since then, Assemblywoman Tucker has been re-elected to her position every two years. This shows that the people in her district continue to trust her to represent them.
In 2011, she suggested a bill that would require bicycles in New Jersey to have a special license plate. However, she withdrew this idea about a week later.
