Cleveland is a small, unincorporated community in Kingman County, Kansas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Cleveland is located about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) south of the city of Kingman.

History of Cleveland

How Cleveland Got Its Name

The community of Cleveland was originally called Carvel. In 1879, it was officially mapped out and given the name Cleveland. It was named after the much larger city of Cleveland, Ohio.

The County Seat Race

Cleveland was located right in the middle of Kingman County. Because of this, the people living there hoped it would become the county seat. The county seat is the main town where the county government offices are located. At that time, the county seat was in Kingman.

With support from a local newspaper called the Cleveland Star, residents asked for a vote to move the county seat to Cleveland. However, Kingman won the vote, partly with help from another town called Dale. The Cleveland Star newspaper eventually moved to Kingman too, changing its name to the Kingman Republican.

Growth and Decline

By 1887, Cleveland had about 80 residents. In 1908, the community had a school, a church, and two grain elevators. It was even planning to build a large hotel.

However, over time, the town started to get smaller. By the 1950s, Cleveland only had the school, the church, one grain elevator, and eight homes. The school closed in 1958, and the church closed in 1967.

Cleveland Today

Today, Cleveland mostly has a grain elevator, which is still very busy, and a few houses. A post office was open in Cleveland from 1880 until 1957. Cleveland was also once a stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

Education

Students in Cleveland attend public schools through the Kingman–Norwich USD 331 school district.
