Cleveland Bay was named by a famous explorer, Lieutenant James Cook. He sailed into the bay on his ship, the HM Bark Endeavour, on June 6, 1770.
How Cleveland Bay Got Its Name
There are two main ideas about how Cleveland Bay got its name. Cook might have named it after John Clevland. John Clevland was an important person who worked for the British Navy from 1751 to 1763.
Another idea is that Cook named the bay after the Cleveland Hills. These hills are near his hometown of Marton in Yorkshire, England.
