Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Click through rate (CTR) is a way to measure how many people click on an online ad or link. It tells you how many people clicked compared to how many people saw it. CTR is always shown as a percentage.

For example, if an online ad has a CTR of 5%, it means that for every 100 people who saw the ad, 5 of them clicked on it. These 5 people then went to the website the ad was promoting. This measurement is very important in online Advertising, for email campaigns, and for search results.

History of CTR

The way people click on online ads has changed a lot over time. In the past, people clicked on ads much more often.

In 1994, the company AT&T put up what many consider the first online ad. It was on a website called HotWired. This first ad had a very high CTR of 44%. This means that out of every 100 people who saw that ad, 44 clicked on it. They then went to the AT&T website.

Today, CTRs are much lower. For example, in 2020, ads on Google Ads had an average CTR of about 3.17%. This means that out of 100 people who saw a Google ad, only about 3 people clicked on it.

Email Campaigns

An email campaign is when a company sends many emails at once to promote something. This could be a product, a service, or just information.

For email campaigns, CTR measures how many people clicked on a link inside the email. These clicks take them to the sender's website. In 2020, the average CTR for email campaigns was around 2.62%. This shows how many people found the email interesting enough to click.

Search Engine Rankings

CTR is also very important for search engines like Google. When you search for something, Google usually shows about 10 results on the first page.

If more people click on the second search result than the first one, Google might notice this. Over time, because the second result has a higher CTR, Google might move it up. This means the second result could become the first result. This idea also affects how videos are ranked on sites like YouTube. Videos with more clicks compared to views tend to rank higher.
