Clifton Bertrand was a very successful athlete. He started winning big early in his career.
Early Wins and Championships
In 1957, he won a gold medal in the 200 meters race. This was at the British West Indies Championships. The next year, in 1958, he won three more gold medals at the same event.
He also took part in the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Even though he didn't reach the finals there, he kept working hard.
Pan American Games Success
Clifton Bertrand showed his talent at the 1959 Pan American Games. He finished fifth in the 200 metres race. He also helped his team win a bronze medal. This was for the British West Indian Federation in the 4 x 100 metres relay. His teammates were Michael Agostini, Wilton Jackson, and Dennis Johnson.
Olympic Appearances
Bertrand competed in the 1960 Olympic Games. He made it to the quarter-finals in the 200 metres. He also ran in the 4x400 metres relay heats. His team, representing the British West Indian Federation, later won a bronze medal in the final.
He returned to the Olympics in 1964. At the 1964 Olympic Games, he competed again but did not reach the final.

Clifton Bertrand moved to the United States. There, he continued his education. He earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Master of Science (M.S.) degree from New York University. Later, he earned a Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University.
While studying, he also kept competing. In 1962, he finished sixth in the NCAA championship.
At the 1963 Pan American Games, he won two more bronze medals. One was in the 400 metres race. The other was in the 4 x 100 metres relay. His teammates for this relay were Anthony Jones, Irving Joseph, and Cipriani Phillip.
Later Career and Recognition
His last major competition was the 1966 Commonwealth Games. He finished eighth in the 4 x 110 yards relay. His teammates were Henry Noel, Cipriani Phillip, and Winston Short.
In 2008, Clifton Bertrand was honored for his achievements. He was inducted into the Trinidad and Tobago Hall of Fame. This recognized his important contributions to sports in his home country.
