Clinton is a neighborhood located in the city of Oakland, California, in the United States. It sits about 36 feet (11 meters) above sea level.

The Story of Clinton

Clinton began in 1850 when two brothers named Patten rented land from Vincent Peralta. This land was near the San Antonio Slough, which is a waterway. In 1852, the Patten brothers and other people worked together to officially create the town of Clinton.

Becoming Part of Brooklyn

In 1856, Clinton joined with a nearby area called San Antonio. Together, they formed a new town named Brooklyn. This name came from a ship that brought early settlers to California in 1846.

Later, in 1870, the town of Brooklyn grew even larger. It joined with another nearby place called Lynn. The combined area kept the name Brooklyn. Just two years later, in 1872, the people living in Brooklyn voted. They decided that their city should become a part of the larger city of Oakland. This is how Clinton eventually became a neighborhood within Oakland.
