Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lynn was a small community that used to exist in Alameda County, California. It was located in the area northeast of a place called Brooklyn. Even though Lynn isn't a separate town anymore, its history is part of how the bigger city of Oakland grew.

What Was Lynn?

Lynn was a community that existed for a short time in California. It was known for having an important factory. Today, the land where Lynn once stood is part of the city of Oakland.

Where Was Lynn Located?

Lynn was situated in Alameda County, which is in California. If you looked on a map back in the 1800s, you would have found Lynn northeast of another community called Brooklyn. Both of these places eventually became part of the larger city of Oakland.

How Did Lynn Become Part of Oakland?

In 1870, Lynn and Brooklyn decided to join together. They officially became one town, and they called this new town Brooklyn. This process is called "incorporation," which means they became an official, self-governing town.

Just two years later, in 1872, the people living in Brooklyn (which included the former Lynn area) voted on something important. They approved a plan for their town to be "annexed" by Oakland. Annexation means that a larger city takes over a smaller area nearby, making it part of the bigger city. So, Lynn and Brooklyn became part of Oakland.

What Was Special About Lynn?

One of the most interesting things about Lynn was its big factory. This factory was called the "Lynn Boot and Shoe Manufacturing Company." It started in 1869 and made lots of shoes and boots.

The factory was named after a city far away in Lynn, Massachusetts. That city was also very famous for making footwear. So, Lynn in California had a connection to a major shoe-making center on the East Coast!
