History of Clinton
A special historical spot in Clinton is called "The Crossing." It's near the south end of Allen Street. This is where two important railroad lines used to meet: the "Chicago and Fond Du Lac" (now called "C.+NW") and the "Racine and Mississippi" (now called "SOO Line").
Back in 1856, these two railroad companies were in a race! Each one wanted to lay their tracks first. That way, the other company would have to pay to build their tracks over the already existing ones.
Another important historical landmark is the Old Clinton Water Tower. It was built in 1895 and is also close to The Crossing.
Famous People from Clinton
- Robert T. Carey: He was a politician who served in the very first Wisconsin State Assembly in 1848. He was a member of the Whig Party.
- Dustin Grow Cheever: He was a Republican politician who represented the area from 1872 to 1873.
- John Conley: Another Republican politician who served from 1882 to 1883.
- Samuel S. Jones: A Republican politician who served from 1895 to 1896.
- Ole Knudsen Nattestad: He was a pioneer immigrant from Norway. He helped start the Jefferson Prairie Settlement.
- Nig Perrine: He was a baseball player who mostly played in smaller leagues. For a short time in 1907, he played for the Washington Senators. He was born in Clinton.
