Clotworthy Upton, 1st Baron Templetown (born March 14, 1721 – died April 16, 1785) was an important person in the royal court and a nobleman from Ireland. He held a special title called "Baron Templetown."
He was the youngest son of Lieutenant Colonel John Upton. His family lived at Castle Upton in County Antrim, Ireland. Clotworthy worked for Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, who was the mother of King George III. He was her "Clerk Comptroller" from 1761 to 1772. This job meant he helped manage her household and money. In 1768, he inherited his family's lands and wealth after his older brothers passed away. On August 3, 1776, he was given the title of Baron Templetown. This made him a "peer" and allowed him to join the Irish House of Lords, which was like a parliament for noblemen in Ireland.
Family Life and New Titles
Clotworthy Upton married Elizabeth Boughton on August 25, 1769. Elizabeth was a "Lady of the Bedchamber" to Princess Amelia of the United Kingdom. This meant she was a close helper and friend to the Princess. Clotworthy's oldest son, John Upton, 1st Viscount Templetown, inherited his father's title. Later, in 1806, John was given an even higher title, becoming a "Viscount Templetown."
