Sanicula odorata, often called the clustered blacksnakeroot, is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the Apiaceae family, which includes plants like carrots and parsley. This plant grows naturally across a large area in eastern North America. You can often find it in forests that have rich soil, especially in damp, low-lying areas. It's quite tough and can even grow in places that aren't perfectly wild or untouched.

The clustered blacksnakeroot blooms in the late spring and early summer.

Spotting Clustered Blacksnakeroot

It can sometimes be tricky to tell this plant apart from other Sanicula species in eastern North America. However, a few key features help identify it:

  • Its leaves usually have five to seven separate parts, called leaflets.
  • The plant's styles (a part of the flower) are much longer than its calyx (the green parts that protect the flower bud).
  • Each small cluster of flowers, called an umbellet, can have between 12 and 25 stamens (the parts that produce pollen).
  • The flowers and the pollen-producing parts (anthers) are a yellowish-green color.
  • The petals of the flowers are much longer than the sepals (the leaf-like parts at the base of the flower).
