History of Clyattville
Early Settlers and Forest Grove
When Clyattville was first settled, only a few families lived there. These families included the Brays, Hunters, Lanes, Arnolds, Covingtons, Quillians, and Clyatts.
Clyattville hasn't always been in its current spot. From 1837 to 1848, the community was known as Forest Grove. It was located north-west of where Clyattville is today. The center of Forest Grove was the Forest Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
The only thing left from Forest Grove today is its cemetery. This cemetery is still used as the main burial ground for modern Clyattville.
How Clyattville Moved
In 1848, the community's post office moved a short distance away. It was moved to a store owned by James M. Clyatt. His family's store had been there for about ten years. It was along a stagecoach route between Troupville, Georgia and Bellville, Florida.
The store was near the intersection of Ousley Road and Old Clyattville Road. This spot was about 1.4 miles (2.3 km) north-west of today's Clyattville. James Clyatt's father, Samuel Mills Clyatt, used to own the store. He also owned a large farm that covered most of the area around Clyattville.
The Railroad Arrives
In the late 1890s, the Valdosta Railway was built. This railroad connected Valdosta, Georgia and Madison, Florida. The train tracks passed very close to Old Clyattville, but not through it. Because of the new railroad, the community slowly moved. People wanted to be closer to where the old stagecoach route crossed the railway. This new spot became modern Clyattville.
Businesses and Life in Old Clyattville
The first store in the new Clyattville was owned by the Bray family. Over time, many more stores opened. These included Zipperer's Grocery, a Minute Market (now Holiday Market), J.W.'s Grocery, and Clyattville 66.
In the past, Clyattville also had a grist mill (for grinding grain) and a cotton gin (for separating cotton fibers). There was also a drugstore and only one church, the Methodist Church.
Early Clyattville was mostly a farming community. Its people made a living from agriculture. In the early 1950s, a big paper mill and a bag plant were built by Owens-Illinois. C.A. Baucom also built a cotton gin.
People in Clyattville used to travel by buggies or wagons. They used these until they could afford cars. The first person in Clyattville to own a car was Dr. Quillian. His office was in Olympia, an old saw mill town along the Valdosta Railway.
Wild Adventures Theme Park
Wild Adventures is a popular theme park that opened in the 1990s. It was first known as Liberty Farms. The park is located about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Clyattville.
