History

Early Settlers

The first people to settle in Clyde arrived around 1876. A man named Mr. Shephard built the very first log cabin home around this time. Many other settlers soon followed him. One of the first settlers was R. J. Estes, who traveled all the way from Fort Worth.

When Mr. Estes and his wife first arrived, they only planned to rest. But they quickly decided to stay. They left their belongings under a tree and went to get more items for their new home. When they returned a few months later, everything they had left was still there, untouched.

The Railroad and Growth

The railroad played a very important role in Clyde's early days. It started with just a boxcar, which is like a train car used for storage. Later, a proper train station was built. With the railroad came more settlers, more homes, and more jobs. Soon, the growing community needed a school for the children.

How Clyde Got Its Name

No one is completely sure how the name "Clyde" came about. Many people believe it was named after a crew foreman who worked for the Texas and Pacific Railway Company. The company had a tent where employees could get supplies. Workers would say, "Let's go up to Clyde's," referring to the supply tent, not a town. Eventually, the railroad company started calling their boxcar location "Clyde."

First Post Office

The first post office in Clyde opened soon after the railroad arrived. Jesse L. Miller was appointed as the first postmaster on June 27, 1881.
