Clyde Sylvester Cahill Jr. (born April 9, 1923 – died August 18, 2004) was an important United States federal judge. He served on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. This means he was a judge for federal cases in the eastern part of Missouri.

Clyde Cahill's Early Life and Work

Clyde Cahill was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He joined the United States Air Force and served from 1942 to 1946. After his military service, he went to college. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Louis University in 1949.

He continued his education at the Saint Louis University School of Law. He received his law degree in 1951. After finishing law school, he worked as a private lawyer in St. Louis until 1954.

Cahill then worked as an assistant circuit attorney for St. Louis from 1954 to 1961. This job involved helping the city with legal matters. He also served as a special assistant circuit attorney from 1961 to 1964.

From 1958 to 1965, he was the main legal advisor for the Missouri branch of the NAACP. The NAACP is a well-known civil rights organization.

He worked for the United States Office of Economic Opportunity in Kansas City from 1966 to 1968. This office helped people in need. Later, he became the general manager of the Human Development Corporation in St. Louis. He held this role from 1968 to 1972.

From 1972 to 1975, he was the leader and main lawyer for the Legal Aid Society of St. Louis. This group helps people who cannot afford a lawyer. In 1975, he became a Circuit Judge for the State of Missouri. He served as a state judge until 1980.

His Time as a United States Judge

On April 2, 1980, President Jimmy Carter chose Clyde Cahill to become a federal judge. He was nominated for a position on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. The United States Senate approved his nomination on May 21, 1980.

He officially became a judge on May 23, 1980. He served as a federal judge for many years. On April 9, 1992, he took on senior status. This means he could work a lighter schedule but still help with court cases.

Judge Cahill continued to serve in this role until he passed away. He died on August 18, 2004, in St. Louis, Missouri.
