History of Coñaripe
The town you see today isn't exactly where the old Coñaripe used to be. The original town was sadly destroyed in 1964. This happened because of a huge mudflow called a lahar.
What is a Lahar?
A lahar is like a fast-moving river of mud, rocks, and water. It forms when volcanic ash and debris mix with water. This often happens from melting snow or heavy rain during a volcanic eruption. Lahars can be very powerful and destructive.
The 1964 Eruption
The lahar that hit Coñaripe in 1964 came from the Villarrica Volcano. This volcano had a "strombolian eruption." A strombolian eruption is when a volcano erupts with mild to moderate explosions. These explosions throw out glowing lava bombs and ash. The lahar flowed over the old town, causing it to be rebuilt in its current spot.
Life in Coñaripe Today
Today, Coñaripe is known as a resort area. People come here to enjoy the lake and the beautiful natural surroundings. It's a peaceful place for holidays and outdoor activities.
