Coşkun Özarı (born January 4, 1931 – died June 22, 2011) was a famous Turkish football player and coach. He was known for being a strong defender for Galatasaray and the Turkish national team. Later, he became a very successful coach, leading teams to many championships.
Early Life and Playing Career
Coşkun Özarı was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1931. He joined the famous Galatasaray football club when he was a very young student. After finishing his studies at Galatasaray Lycee, he started playing for the main Galatasaray team at just 17 years old.
For the next 13 years, Özarı was a key player in the defense for Galatasaray. He also played an important role for the Turkish national team. He was known for his strong tackles on the field. Even though he played tough, he was always a polite and mild-mannered person.
During his time as a player, he helped Galatasaray win many championships and Turkish Cups. He played alongside other football legends like coach Gündüz Kılıç, goalkeeper Turgay Şeren, and striker Metin Oktay.
Becoming a Coach
Coşkun Özarı decided to end his playing career early because he wanted to become a football coach. In 1961, he went to England to attend a special coaching seminar. This seminar was led by a famous coach named Walter Winterbottom.
When he returned to Turkey, he became an assistant coach for Galatasaray. Just three years later, he took over as the head coach. As head coach, he led Galatasaray to win four championships, showing his great coaching skills.
In 1965, he was chosen to coach the Turkish national team. He coached the national team for a total of 10 years, including a period from 1972 to 1976. He ended his long coaching career in 1986. After that, he started a new career as a sportswriter, sharing his knowledge and passion for football.
Death
Coşkun Özarı passed away on June 22, 2011. He died at a hospital in Istanbul. Many important people from major football clubs attended his religious funeral service at Teşvikiye Mosque. His body was then laid to rest at the Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.
