Eutrochium dubium, also known as coastal plain joe pye weed, is a beautiful flowering plant found in North America. It belongs to the sunflower family, just like sunflowers and daisies! This plant naturally grows along the Atlantic coast, from Georgia in the United States all the way up to Nova Scotia in Canada.
Discovering Coastal Plain Joe Pye Weed
Coastal plain joe pye weed is a type of herbaceous perennial plant. This means it has soft, green stems instead of woody ones, and it lives for more than two years. It can grow quite tall, sometimes reaching up to 170 centimeters (about 5 and a half feet)!
What Does It Look Like?
The stems of this plant can be green with purple spots, or sometimes they are completely purple. When it blooms, it produces many flower heads. These flowers grow in flat-topped clusters. Each flower head has between 4 and 10 small flowers inside. These tiny flowers are usually dark purple, but sometimes they can be pink or even white. Unlike some other flowers in the sunflower family, coastal plain joe pye weed only has "disc florets" (the tiny flowers in the center) and no "ray florets" (the petal-like flowers on the outside, like a daisy's petals). These lovely flowers are also very attractive to birds.
Where Does It Grow?
This plant loves sunny spots, but it can also grow in places with some shade. It's not too picky about the type of soil it grows in, as long as the soil doesn't get too dry. This makes it a strong and adaptable plant in its natural habitat along the coast.
