The coat of arms of Colombia is a special symbol for the country. It has a shield with many important pictures on it. On top of the shield, there's an Andean condor, which is a large bird. It holds an olive branch, showing peace and freedom. The condor looks to its right, with its wings spread wide.

The country's motto, Libertad y Orden (which means Liberty and Order in Spanish), is written on a ribbon. This ribbon is placed between the bird and the shield. The words are in black letters on a golden background.

What the Coat of Arms Looks Like

The Colombian flag hangs on both sides of the shield. The shield itself has three main parts, each telling a different story about Colombia.

Bottom Part: Ships and Oceans

At the bottom of the shield, you can see ships. These ships remind us of Colombia's history with the sea. They especially point to the Isthmus of Panama, which was once part of Colombia until 1903. Today, the ships also show the two big oceans (the Atlantic and Pacific) that touch Colombia. The sails on the ships mean that Colombia trades with countries all over the world. They also represent the country's growing economy.

Middle Part: The Cap of Freedom

In the middle section of the shield, on a silver background, there is a Phrygian cap. This cap is a classic symbol of liberty and freedom. It reminds people of the fight for independence.

Top Part: Wealth and History

The top part of the shield has a pomegranate on a blue background. The pomegranate represents the Viceroyalty of New Granada. This was an old name for Colombia when it was a colony in the 1700s. Next to the pomegranate are two cornucopias, also known as "horns of plenty."

  • The horn on the right is overflowing with gold and silver coins.
  • The horn on the left is filled with tropical fruits.

These horns show how rich Colombia is in both its natural resources and its agriculture.

Who Designed the Coat of Arms?

The coat of arms was designed by Francisco de Paula Santander. It was officially adopted on May 9, 1834. There have been only small changes to it since then. The most recent changes were made in 1924.
