A post office called Coatsburgh was established in 1856, and the name was changed to Coatsburg in 1893. The village has the name of Robert Coats, a first settler.

According to the 2010 census, Coatsburg has a total area of 0.12 square miles (0.31 km2), all land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 226 people, 88 households, and 63 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,855.7 people per square mile (727.2/km²). There were 101 housing units at an average density of 829.3 per square mile (325.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.23% White, 0.88% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.98% of the population.
There were 88 households out of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% were non-families. 25.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.06.
