Scientific classification

The Coban climbing salamander (Bolitoglossa helmrichi) is a special type of salamander. It belongs to the Plethodontidae family, which are lungless salamanders. This means they breathe through their skin and the lining of their mouths, not with lungs!

This salamander is found only in Guatemala. When an animal or plant is found only in one specific place, we say it is endemic to that area.

Where the Coban Climbing Salamander Lives

The Coban climbing salamander lives in special places called habitats. Its favorite homes are moist forests found in mountains. These are called subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Forest Homes

Imagine a forest that is always warm and wet, high up in the mountains. That's where these salamanders like to be! They need a lot of moisture to keep their skin wet so they can breathe.

Living in Plantations

Sometimes, you can also find them in plantations. These are areas where people grow crops, like coffee or bananas. Even though these aren't natural forests, the salamanders can sometimes find enough damp, shady spots to live there.

Why the Coban Climbing Salamander Needs Help

Sadly, the Coban climbing salamander is facing a big problem. It is threatened by habitat loss. This means the places where it lives are disappearing.

What is Habitat Loss?

Habitat loss happens when forests are cut down. It also happens when land is changed for farming or building. When their homes are destroyed, these salamanders have nowhere to live. This makes it very hard for them to survive and have babies.

Protecting Their Home

Scientists and conservationists are working to protect the forests and other areas where these salamanders live. By saving their habitats, we can help ensure the Coban climbing salamander continues to thrive in Guatemala.
